Seriously? Just leaving aside the whole topic of politicians who’re in the pocket of the recording industry and that whole debate, who in hell could POSSIBLY think this is a good idea? George Orwell had soooo little imagination and so little vision…..

SOPA and PIPA are back in committee to be re-worded, not alas killed. The “entertainment” lawyers have found it too difficult to go after sites outside the US, much more so than a 0-year-old who finds a music video on the Web, so the plan is to ban all foreign sites. An expected strategy – instead of putting the revisions out as bills, attach to some big-budget thing like Medicare at the last moment.

Not that domestic issues are not in the works. A school has some watch-appearing “health” monitors which were for kids to wear during PhysEd to assess their info during workouts: then the supervisors came up with the brilliant idea of having the monitors worn for a week at a time to be evaluated 24/7…

Some jerk in Hawaii (who happens to be a Democrat Rep) wants a law passed that says “all ISPs must keep a record of all sites visited by everyone for 2 years”:

“Its House of Representatives has scheduled a hearing this morning on a new bill (PDF) requiring the creation of virtual dossiers on state residents. The measure, H.B. 2288, says “Internet destination history information” and “subscriber’s information” such as name and address must be saved for two years.”

Democratic Rep. John Mizuno of Oahu is the lead sponsor;”

Here’s the “troubling” language:

“creation of virtual dossiers on state residents”.

Some well-meaning but gullible people have suggested just going to Ixquick &c. But the law would say “all ISPs”, including coffee-shops and hotels.

Evidently the bill sponsors took a little heat (like from the ACLU (who once in a while gets something right)), and have backed down.

There’s a link in the story (Followup), in which the sponsors say “We just want the ability for law enforcement to be able to capture the activities of crime.” and “Hawaiians should not be alarmed by how broad the bill is…”

One thought seems to be that this was a “run it up the flagpole and see if anybody objects” thing.

Commentors at CNET seem to understand why this was not a really brilliant idea.
