Meet Banoffe “Danger” Pie. Ban for banana + offee for toffee = Banoffe pie. If you are like me, you’ve never heard the term ‘banoffee’, no less tasted it. Non Americans are roling their eyes now as its nothing new but humor my astonishment – how has this dessert not won us Yankees over?
I will let you know how it goes. And if I survive the calorie tsunami.

OMG…I’m in love…
Do you have to chew on cloves afterwards?
I hope not. They make me gag.
Spirin? Whiskey swish?
I’d be more concerned about the insulin tsunami than the calories.
I’m just glad it’s caramel….looks like a tin can of beef gravy.
I tell myself I’m not actually going to eat any of it. Much. Probably just a taste to make sure it doesn’t actually come out like dogfood.
Really. Because it’s bad for ya. Even though it’s milk. And bananas. And graham crackers.
Come to think of it, this is sounding more like health food by the minute.
That’s just eeeevil!
(I’m making one this weekend)

I’m totally digging the toffee part…will come in handy for lots of other stuff!
My middle name starts with D, and whenever anybody asks “What does the D stand for” I ALWAYS answer “Danger. Yes, that’s right – Danger is my middle name.”
Most people at lest smile.
Progress notes:
Boiling ANYTHING for 2 1/2 hours will turn your kitchen into a rainforest.
Well, the picture alone sent my blood sugar levels to Neptune.
Looks like I picked the wrong day to quit eating so many sweets.
*drooling here*
I have to add LOTS of calories to my diet and this looks like just the ticket!
I am not crazy about whipped cream, but is the pie really runny?
I wonder if it could be mixed in with the “toffee”?
*I never met a recipe I couldn’t twist ;)
OK, so the pie is done and cooling off in the fridge. Notes:
1. The “toffee” (actually more like dulce le leche than real toffee) isn’t runny at all after @ 2 1/2 hours. And there’s just barely enough of it in one can to do the job, even with three large bananas. Next time I might make two cans and save the leftovers for another project. And by “project” I mean “ice cream topping or any other handy excuse”.
2. Even after cooling for 20 minutes, cool enough to pick it up barehanded, a can of boiled condensed milk is under substantial pressure. Use caution when opening. I have goo on my kitchen ceiling.
3. Good luck spreading cool whip on warm toffee, sucka.
Nevertheless it looks right. Smells great. Now it just has to pass muster with the missus, who’s of the frankly un-American opinion that fruits don’t belong in desserts, and vice versa. No, I’m not positive that she’s a filthy commie agent; but opinions like this, and the uncanny effectiveness of her interrogation techniques, make me wonder.
I know what I am gonna try this weekend!
Thanks apo!
I am not crazy about whipped cream, –MinT
Cooking with or wearing?
(oops, did I type that out loud?)
Added to my list of spring projects. The pie, silly>
“fruits don’t belong in desserts”
Of course not! They belong in California!
Nyuck, nyuck, nyuck….
I wonder if crushed, toasted animal crackers would work for a crust?
Dunno why not, they specify some other kinda weird Britishy kinda cracker as an alternative to grahams. Go hog wild.
Just tried a bite of it and I gotta say…it’s pretty damn awesome stuff. Not overly sweet, but definitely a dessert. Despite what my wife says.
Ooo, how about those Danish butter cookies that appear around Christmas?
I just shorted out my keyboard :)
My wife’s family has a recipe like this – using Eagle Brand condensed milk. Boil an unopened can for 45 minutes (I think) making sure the can is completely submerged in water the whole time. Let it cool a bit and then pour it in the graham cracker crust, add bananas and whupped cream. Get the coffee and enjoy. Yum!
The above recipe, with a few modifications, will also work for key lime pie, and there’s nothing wrong with that.
If you do it properly, this pie is waaay too expensive! Why? Whell hiring a “bomb squad” to open a pressurized can of
napalmcondensed milk,—–is why!Never had a can of condensed milk explode in over 30 years of making this pie. Keeping it covered while boiling and letting it cool before opening – simple rules that anyone other than government employee can follow.
This is what kids are good for. Hey, Johnnie, open that can of slightly-heated canned milk for me, wouldja?
This could be used as a glucose tolerance test.
Place here serves the carmel pie, no bananas. Love the stuff. Always boil 3 or more cans at a time, dessert is just a graham cracker pie crust away at any moment.
