Given all the noise about Florida’s “Stand Your Ground” law, is this indicative of anything?
When Ryan Young, a butcher at the Del Rey Oaks Safeway, stopped a customer from hitting his pregnant girlfriend in the store last month, he won praise from the police department.
But Safeway slapped Young with a suspension — without pay — while the company investigates the altercation.
Safeway spokeswoman Wendy Gutshall said in a statement. “We have store security video of the incident and have been engaged in a careful and thoughtful forensic review of what transpired. …There are two sides to every story, and we would ask that judgment be reserved,… We will be relying on the video and other relevant evidence as well as statements of eyewitnesses and other information to make a final decision.”"
…”Now it’s been almost a month,” [Del Rey Oaks Police Chief Ron] Langford said. “We conducted an investigation, we filed the case with the district attorney’s office. What are they investigating?”

Looks to me like Safeway has already taken action: they’ve fined him a month’s pay (so far) while pretending to look into it. I hope he finds himself the right kind of lawyer and they discover some way to ream Safeway both financially and publicity-wise.
It would be nice if pregnant women organized a picketed boycott nation wide.

Those boneheads just can’t get to the meat of the matter and are ruminating on just the gristle while masticating his finances and life.
Unsafeway does need a boycott to get their attention to straighten things out and make him whole, with a raise and significant punitive motivation. Oh, and public apology.
Safeway is waiting to see if the barbarian who was beating the pregnant woman is going to find a lawyer trying to pay off his student loan from law school by sueing the employer for employing a person who tortiously interfered with said barbarian’s civil right to whup up on pregnant ladies. Probably on advice of legal counsel.

There was another case (was it here?), of a State employee finding a pistol in the bushes, calling the cops, holding it turning it in later since they didn’t come right away.
He got fired because the Rules say “may not possess a gun”. “… after 23 years on the job.”

Safeway fears he was being judgmental when he decided to interfere.
Never liked Safeway. They always had that “officious, moralistic leftist is about to do something stupid and blame you for it” smell.
Also hate the “customer tracking cards” so many stores are using now. It hasn’t spread yet, but Safeway also pioneered “individual pricing,” or “making sure you never get discounts on what you actually buy,” IIRC.
As far as what they’re doing to this guy, it’s more like they’re “firing him without firing him,” putting him on leave until he has to find another job, so they won’t have “fired” him.
Because, you know, liberals *always* favor thugs and criminals, it’s like in their genes or anything.
Large organizations with relatively deep pockets are desperately afraid of lawsuits, so it’s preferable in their eyes that employees not get involved in anything outside their job description.
Along with Political Correctness, out of control tort lawyers and stupid juries saying “Screw the deep pockets, give ‘em millions” are rending our moral fabric and ruining business in this country.
Those trends are making it personally dangerous to be honorable, plain speaking and moral.
dnqdwg: I’ve read the same thing about Japan. People there are so afraid of getting sued by someone they help that they’ll let someone who’s injured just lie there until the police show up.
