There are no signs of rioters, wind-damaged homes or flooding. The brand new City Hall features gleaming marble floors and the public recreation centers offer Zumba, karate and Pilates classes.
Despite all of its suburban trimmings, North Las Vegas is officially a disaster area.
After five years of declining property taxes, massive layoffs and questionable spending, leaders of the blue-collar, family-oriented city outside Las Vegas declared a state of emergency, invoking a rarely used state law crafted for unforeseen disasters…

Well at least they’re not asking for your wedding gifts like Obama.
The party’s over. Now, as usual, the taxpayer is expected to pay for cleaning up the mess.
In a less polite society, a few dozen elected officials, and their employees, would be covered with pitch, feathers, tied to a rail and eventually dumped on the edge of town….or something worse.
Unforeseen disasters– I can’t be out of money, I still have plenty of checks!
As I’ve mentioned before 20 years ago I drove an ice cream truck in North Las Vegas and “white flight” was already in progress then.
The Crips live in an apartment complex on the SE side and the Bloods lived in a complex on the NW side. In between was all blue collar single family homes. Those were boom years and many of those residents fled to Las Vegas and it’s hugely fast growing West and South sides.
Just read yesterday that the HMFIC of this project was touting that the plan is to make a “community” out of North Las Vegas. Yannow, like Detroit? [visualize a community that holds a picnic--------right after the firefight......]
The Missus and I commute to Detroit weakly. From all the signs and graffiti I see down there, I can only deduce that these are people who are extremely proud, though they have nothing to be proud of. (Sort of like publik skool kidz)
It sounds as though Vegas is headed in the same direction.
Paul,
Las Vegas is a completely different city than North Las Vegas. It’s like if you were to drive down Woodward Ave. in the mid to late 70′s. Once you crossed 8 Mile going south everything changed. (I married a girl from Ferndale). Now they tell me it’s become like North Africa and sub-Saharan Africa. I’m not surprised.
That’s how LV and NLV are. the two City governments are like black and white… literally.
