Now, the Social Security Administration’s gettin’ all ammo-hoardy, too.
Request for Proposal: 174,000 rounds of .357 Sig 125 grain bonded jacketed hollow point Law Enforcement ammo. [SSA site with RFP .pdf links]

No one *I* know uses hollow points for target practice……
Guys,
I’ve shot IDPA with FBI agents and yes they used factory JHP Winchester T series in the matches. The FBI give them ammo for the match and I guess they don’t use FMJ since they get the JHPs by the ton.
I hope the price of .357 Sig drops as a result of the ammo companies pushing out so much ammo! I do like the round.
WHY do they need all this ammo again?
The SSA?
Are they expecting the LOLs (little old ladies) to start raisin’ hell because they want their checks?
WTF?
The SSA is buying ammo because they are going to be repurposed.
That or Obama is planning on having “his people” become “security” for each individual government agency.
They are preparing for war.
We should have been doing the same decades ago, but nooooooo TV is too important.
I’m a little pissed they have a few more rounds than I do.
Gotta work on that…
thanks for the laugh, blindshooter!
Social Security Administration…
Repurposed…
to Administer the Security of the Social-ist State.
Well now or in the near future checks will be phased out and all these old folks have to get electronic direct deposit whether they like it or not.
That old lady believed it when Churchill said “…we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender.”
She and her Bren have been on the beach at Torquay ever since.
Paul 2: ditto.
MiT 3: WHY do they need all this ammo again?
I suppose the SSA is patrolling the fisheries too? Or maybe they’re planning to reduce retirement claims a lot?
SSA: 174,000 rounds
NWS: 46,000 rounds
Janet’s Sorority: 750 million rounds
FBI: 100 million
USFS: 320,000
USFW: 13,500

A govt bailout of the ammo industry?
Pre-emptive purchasing?
Jihaddi Threat?
Recall the IRS bought a boatload of shotguns a few years back. Now many of theses agencies have legit reasons for some arms and ammo. They all have their own security. Fisheries does board boats looking for poachers, IRS does raids. But the SSA? That much? This is getting spooky.
There are two not-crazy reason I can think of: to keep prices high and keep us from buying it because they are sucking it all up. This is the first time I’ve seen a good reason to stock weapons and ammo NOT used by the gov.
I want an FN 5.7. Just sayin’.
Turns out it makes a kind of sense:
http://cnsnews.com/news/article/social-security-administration-explains-plan-buy-174000-hollow-point-bullets
295 officers investigating Social Security fraud, threat response, etc. means less than 600 rounds each.
I’m inclined to doubt the wisdom and efficacy of every federal agency having its own police force, but given that it does, the SSA’s ammo acquisition makes sense — in fact, since officers ought to practice, it would be reasonable to think that’s no more than a years supply.
Yeah I know, training standards aren’t what the ought to be.
Yeah I know, if its target ammo, no body buy your Very Rich Uncle (Sam) can afford to train and target shoot primarily with premium HP ammo. I sure hope we get a new administration in that can create a culture of effective frugality in the Federal Government — should happen right after pigs begin to routinely fly, the frugality that is.
SteveHGraham 13: I want an FN 5.7.
Don’t blame you my man, it’s a cool thing; but just know that the actual stopping power is probably no better than very good 9mm +P ammo.
