Politically, even assuming that President Obama is as sinister as it is fashionable around these parts to believe he is, he stood to gain nothing. Unless I’m mistaken, he’s ahead in the polls. Why engineer a huge PR question mark two months before the election?
The Libyan leadership stood to gain absolutely nothing from antagonising the United States and permitting the death of a man who was a battle-tested friend, an Arabist diplomat. There has been a steady stream of apologies and promises of cooperation flowing out of Tripoli since this happened. The new Libyan government has poor tribal and Islamist credentials, and desperately craves international goodwill and some semblance of control over a disorganised society very recently lavishly armed with the best Western small arms.
Same goes for Egypt. The last thing Morsi, who is dealing with renewed social unrest and trouble in the Sinai, needs is a flare-up with the United States while it is grudgingly willing to give the Muslim Brotherhood government a chance. Indeed, he just now exhorted the protesters against the film in Cairo to remain peaceful, and his police are fighting a pretty hot street battle to protect the American embassy as we speak.
While it is true that al-Qaeda used the protests in Benghazi as cover for an assault, the overall culprit is the film. Libya, Egypt, Afghanistan shutting down YouTube, and now an embassy got stormed in Yemen, too. While I respect the position that free speech figures as the foremost of American values, I think we are approaching the crowded theatre scenario, and the Israeli-American Jew who authored the screed probably ought to face some sort of legal consequences.
No winners here. On a personal level, I haven’t been this sad about the loss of a diplomat since Sergio Vieira de Mello. Stevens’s death was really, really unfortunate.
Yeah, right. We may have lost a citizen or two and a spare ambassador, but at least our greatly beloved leader is still safe and unharmed, so we’ve got that going for us. Bet in another four years he has that pesky Israel problem satisfactorily resolved, too. Four more years!
