OUTRAGE and RIOTS in 3… 2…

whose flag shall we burn?

In an inspired bit of timing, that Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art’s “Awards in the Visual Arts” winning!, National Endowment for the Arts sponsored “Art” piece, Piss Christ is going on display again.

Let’s get ready for the Christian riots, flag burnings and killings!
[hey - it's the only way to get results. right?]

[The work] will be displayed at the Edward Tyler Nahem Gallery in Manhattan on Thursday [9/27]. The artwork features a “photograph of the crucifix submerged in the artist’s urine.”

C’mon, O-Boyz. Here’s a chance to exercise your new anti-blasphemy laws. Gonna pass it up?

The gallery released a statement … “…The fact that this work continues to draw controversy on both sides of the political, social and religious aisles unfortunately overshadows the artist’s intention, which is to engage the viewer on both a visual and intellectual level. In these times of heated religious fervor it is important to remember that freedom of expression remains dear to any democracy.”

[Serrano] adds, the situation around NEA funding that “Piss Christ” ignited “never got better . . . the budget of the NEA was slashed in half. There seems to be a sort of dislike for the arts, and for the government supporting the arts. It’s not right.”

Art jackassery is irritating, sure; but all’s you have to do is not look at it.
What’s offensive is that the taxpayers and Christians were forced to pay for it.

The US Constitution gives absolutely no authority for the gov’t to spend money on the arts, except to protect it via copyright, trademark, and patent law. You want your money stolen to pay for somebody else’s taste? Fine. Pass an amendment. Otherwise, stop welfare for Big Art™.

Serrano is not right, both in the head and with the supposition his pathetic no-talent grasp for attention by offending both people’s religion and their plain old decency is worthy of taxpayer subsidy.

Maybe I should stick a picture of Serrano up to his nose in a dog turd and demand equal time at the museum. And payment, of course.

(I saw the P.G. name Out There somewhere. It’s too good not to use again.)

“There seems to be a sort of dislike for the arts,

and for the government supporting the arts. It’s not right.”

There’s a dislike for poseurs and wannabes passing themselves off as “artists”.

There’s also a dislike for the government spending money on things it has no Constitutional authority for.

If Mr X’s art is good enough for people to want it, people will buy it – just like everything else from iPhones to beer. If they won’t buy it, the artist might just consider another career choice.

I’ve reread alla your comments & also tried to figgur out
why it was decided to display this POS so-called art at this
particular time. Over the last few years, the Obozo gang
has developed a real talent for distractions, diversions,
straw men, attacking any criticism, CYA, blaming Bush,
etc, etc. This ‘piss art’ trot out at this time seems to me
like a CYA stunt, so they can hide behind ‘equal opportunity’
insults. Then they can show the muzzie world that they
aren’t the only ones that this country is insulting.
I think that Obozo is desperate to salvage his reputation
or at least his self-image of his wunnerful relationship with
the muzzie world. I can’t prove it, but the timing & the
CYA political aspect are awfully suspicious to me!

Rickn8or (1) nailed the whole other side of the situation.

Lance @ 38: “I also tried to figgur out

    .”

Actually, the timing works out. We can show the Muslims that civilized folk don’t riot, even when a sacred object is defiled. Compare and contrast. Perhaps we can persuade Mr Serrano to stick a Koran in a jar of piss right next to his other “work of art.”

Sign on a church just down the road: “Those who believe in the true God do not riot even when offended.”

Government art is like government cheese. You have to pay for it whether you want to or not, and it’s awful.

  44. Posted September 23, 2012 at 11:29 am |

In these times of heated religious fervor it is important to remember that freedom of expression remains dear to any democracy.

Hey Poindexter, we don’t live in a democracy. This is a representative republic. Democracy is mob rule. Maybe it’s slightly tangential to this discussion, but get your facts straight.

There seems to be a sort of dislike for the arts, and for the government supporting the arts. It’s not right.

Hey other Poindexter, the government has no constitutional authority to support the arts.

Regarding “Piss Christ”, a quote by Thomas Jefferson comes to mind: “To compel a man to furnish funds for the propagation of ideas he disbelieves and abhors is sinful and tyrannical.”

Regarding government subsidies for starving artistes, in the words of James Madison, “With respect to the words ‘general welfare,’ I have always regarded them as qualified by the detail of powers connected with them. To take them in a literal and unlimited sense would be a metamorphosis of the Constitution into a character which there is a host of proofs was not contemplated by its creators.”

  45. Posted September 23, 2012 at 12:07 pm |

Oh, and I just had an idea for a (social) science experiment:

    1. Place “Piss Christ” and a newly-commissioned “Piss Mohammad” side by side in a public art exhibit.
    2. Record which religion goes on a riotous rampage, and measure how how many lives are lost, due to which religion.
    3. Hypothesize why it is safer to make a “Piss Christ” than a “Piss Mohammad”, regardless of the relative value to humanity of one over the other.

  46. Lance
    Posted September 23, 2012 at 12:35 pm |

Karl (45), It can’t be an ‘experiment’ is the result is a foregone conclusion!

Today, I’m glad I don’t know how to do PS! I’d prolly make up the Islamic
version of Seranno’s (in)famous little art object & try to find out how
people of that religion respond to it! I’m sure that the WH & DoS would
appreciate this attempt to demonstrate the wonderful civilized & humane
qualities of that ancient religion & way of life!

ART?? A*R*T ??? Why don’t you “artists” stick a Koran on a pile of sh….aving cream (be nice and clean …) and talk about – what’s it ?” ah, yes, that “freedom of expression remains dear to any democracy”. Try to repeat it while being stonned or hanging from a rope …

He’s an artist. If looking gay is an art.

  49. Posted September 23, 2012 at 7:24 pm |

Lance (46), you’re right of course. I was thinking of an “experiment” like the ones we used to do on the air tracks in Physics 101 to “verify” the acceleration due to gravity or the like. It’s well established, but you have to learn the procedure.

The weird thing is, no matter how many times we repeat social “science” experiments (socialism, communism, capitalism, islamofascism, anarchy, monarchy, oligarchy, liberty, etc.) the ones that always really work best are liberty and capitalism. But the illiberal control freaks keep insisting on yet more experiments, on real people no less, and they keep getting the same predictable results. WTF?

Socialism is like perpetual motion. It doesn’t work. Unless you produce more power than you consume, the wheels grind to a halt. The United States is nearly at break-even now (according to Mitt Romney 47% takers and 53% producers). Given the friction of government, we may already be unable to keep the wheels turning.

So I guess if the Christan religions, say the Catholic Church, decided to bring back heavy prison terms for defiling Christianity, and used the Vatican (which is a separate state) to extradite them from the country were they ‘artist’ defiled Christianity in some way, it would be legal?

Would be interesting to see the so-called-artist in chains being stuffed on an airliner and sent overseas to a ‘Gitmo’.

I would cry, but the tears would be from laughter.

It’s so easy for these gutless looser to defame peaceful religions but they run from the Muslims cause of the CONSEQUENCES.

They know there is no consequence (at least on this earth) for their actions as long as they keep away from the Muslims.
