(What? Nah, no lecture this time. The ABCs were covered: on-line with 9-1-1, gun, safe room.)
Okay, you win. Today’s lesson is in comments (7 & 10).

While I think she added admirably and bravely, I think that that it’s fortunate that she only wounded the guy instead of killing him. Killing another human, even if it is a POS, low-life, two-legged crap-sack, would be a real psychological load for a 12-year-old to handle. If she had killed him, what would be the odds that the dead shit-hook’s next-o-kin would have brought a “wrongful death” suit against this girl’s family?
Good for her.
She did the right thing by calling her mother first. If she’d called 911 and followed their “police first” instructions, she’d probably be dead.
oops,
My state (and no doubt many others) make it a felony to leave a loaded firearm within the easy reach of a minor.
In some places the DA would be gearing up a prosecution.
That said, good that it was a Glock. Pretty much point and shoot. Like a revolver, no safety to deactivate.
Bet that pistol was LOUD in that closet.
I’ll also bet she didn’t hear it either, maybe noticed the ears ringing later?
Love to know if Mom got her some training with the weapon, most 12 year old ladies I know don’t know which end the round comes out of. I did coach a couple 13 year old girls on the HP rifle range that picked it up scary quick, much faster than males the same age. One went Distinguished her second year! I was 30 when I finally got the medal.
Good girl! Made a holey man out of that guy!
Good for her!
Teh perforated one will have fun ‘splaining that in jail.
“Yeah, I got shot by a 12 year old girl.”
or nothing like that.
Brad (3) Excellent point, so looks like it’s lecture time, after all.
It’s a violation of NC law, too, to leave a firearm and ammo unsecured if a child resides in the house (so doesn’t apply when grandkids are visiting a childless house). Law notwithstanding, secure your guns with kids around. Although teaching a kid to handle guns and to shoot is usually a good idea, I wouldn’t depend on that to keep ‘em out of danger. Trouble is, kids have peers, and another visiting kid can talk your kid into anything. Apparent maturity and responsibility don’t count when they’re unsupervised around guns. The law usually has some provision for “emancipated minors,” though. Check it out with a lawyer in your State.
Shooting though a wood door works (so it’s no good for cover, only for concealment), but there is a real danger of shooting a rescuer (i.e. a cop, neighbor, family member), so make sure you’re on with the 911 operator, and you know the cops aren’t in your house yet.
Yell (with your drill-field voice, not your panicked-squirrel voice), “Get out! I am armed, and I have called the police. If you try to enter, I will shoot!” or somesuch.
If the intruder claims to be a cop, get a badge number or name and ask the 911 operator if he’s responding to your call. (Of course, you don’t give away your location to the intruder, if he doesn’t know where you are, if you can avoid it.)
Put the gun down before you open the door to a cop, and show him that your hands are empty. After all, he doesn’t know who’s whom. If you’re not confident enough to put the gun down, don’t open the friggin’ door. If you don’t truly believe that the person on the other side of the door is trying to harm you, don’t shoot through it.
I had almost bothered to mention the rule violation (know your target and what is beyond it) but didn’t.
Good lecture, as always.
Teach the kiddies as early as they show an interest. (9y/o for my kiddie)
My kids first fired a pistol when they were 8 and 6 years old. How does a girl, from TEXAS no less, not fire a gun until she is 12?
(7) addendum
Be prepared to sit quietly in handcuffs until things get straightened out in law-enforcement’s mind.
Hey, put yourself in their place. They want to go home to their families, too.
Oh, and tell. the. truth.
If there’s a serious shooting injury, wait for a lawyer before saying anything other than “I had to defend myself. I think you’ll understand that I’d like my lawyer present when I make a statement.” or somesuch.
However, if you have info to help the cops identify and catch the guy(s), including whether they were armed, tell ‘em that.
If you embellish or shade the truth, you will be caught out in a lie.
Guess what happens then? Go on, guess.
Re comments 7 & 10: So if she had a lawyer in the closet to advise her she would probably be raped and dead now, and the lawyer would be suing the victim’s family.
^ Nah, the lawyer’s for afterwards.
What you say will be used against you.
Then again, hidin’ behind a lawyer while bein’ shot at might be a good idea.
Nuthin’ gets past ‘em.
According to the movies I have seen, a door will stop a bullet. Hay bales and oil barrels also make excellent armor.
^ *heh*
TV/movie ballistics, a good way for somebody to get hurt.
This was in Oklahoma. Their gun laws are pretty much the same as Texas gun laws, few. She did exactly as she should have. The 911 operator also aided her in doing what she should have. None of the “put down the gun and wait for the deputy” nonsense. You can debate different scenarios all day and night. This real scenario played out perfectly.
To my knowledge there are no laws in Texas regarding keeping guns locked up even with kids in the house. I am a bit surprised this gal had not fired a weapon before, but it seems obvious her parents told her/showed her the gun and told her what it was for.
Monday morning QBing is not necessary for this story. She, her mom and the 911 operator performed perfectly. Only the intruders screwed up and happily contributed to a lesson in reality.
Here’s two links I watched awhile back over at Rogies. They may be a bit long but well worth the time.
First, a former defense attorney turned professor. He’s good.

Next, part two, by a police officer. I now do what they say even if it’s a traffic stop.

Very sound advice for all of us.
With the way our culture & daily life have become in our
‘Constitutional Rebublic’, this story was inspiring & uplifting
to me, in spite of the circumstances It was also proof of the
societal value of the 2nd amendment & a vivid demonstration
that citizens don’t have to be victims. I couldn’t help getting
some dust in my eyes watching that vid. I was sooo impressed
with the way she dealt with the ‘survival’ moment, & especially
her attitude & talking about it afterwards.
I’m getting instant disgust, revulsion & anger at the way I
anticipate all the anti-gun crazies, and especially all the
libtard, judgmental, lying, exaggerating & arrogant MFM
talking faces making a Cause célèbre out of this incident!
Forgotz to say that I hope this whole story, including the video
interview with Kendra, inspires a bazillion Mothers to not only
arm themselves for home defense, but teach their kids to be
able to do what Kendra did! I have read some intartoobz
articles about the increasing number of first time gun buyers
being wimminz! Yanno, with the garter belt holsters!
Good comments all.
Remember, when people bad-mouth gun ownership, consider whether they’re actually bad-mouthing the natural right of self-defense and advocating dependence on gov’t force.
Self defense is a natural right. Every organism on this planet has the right to defend itself as a condition of life. American law is based on English Common Law which fully recognizes the right to self defense.
If you get into a debate with an anti-gunner, see if you can steer them to stating their position on responsible individual self-defense as a right and duty* vs being dependent upon the state for protection (i.e. citizen vs subject).
* Arguably, you have a “social duty” to defend yourself. A society that defends itself provides a measure of security and liberty to all, as a fallout.
I love a happy ending.
