Peekaboooo!

I found this cute and enlightening.

It’s an adorable game parents have played with their young children for generations. But now researchers are looking for a scientific answer to explain why children think they actually disappear when they cover their eyes while playing peekaboo.

The researchers then attempted to distinguish what exactly creates the feeling of invisibility – whether it was not being able to see at all or just because the other person couldn’t see their eyes.

In each instance, the majority of children felt they were not being seen so long as their eyes didn’t meet the other person’s, giving some support to the ideology of eyes being the the window to the soul. [more]

But first … »
But first …
… you need a soul.

As I said … enlightening.

A blood alcohol content of about .20 [...give or take...] will also make you disappear! [...note: risk of side effects when reappearing the next morning...]

I can’t claim to have a clear memory of everything I was thinking when I was two years old… but I don’t *remember* ever thinking that covering my eyes would make me disappear. If I wanted to hide, I would go somewhere *other* people couldn’t see, not somewhere *I* couldn’t see!

COL Jerry (#5): As it approaches .15, quite often there are two or three of you, bobbing from side to side. The effect is usually very funny. One big problem is waking up in strange places.

Merovign (#9): There have been studies on very young kids, where there’s a wall on a table, and the experimenter moves a toy or doll or some such from one side to the other, going behind the wall, I think the kids eventually figure out to start looking at the other side of the wall where it’s going to reappear.
