Leading Teh Nation!!!

[California] this week begins auctioning off greenhouse gas emission credits, thereby generating billions of dollars that politicians will spend on programs supposedly connected to reducing global warming.

Let’s take another run at that: “…thereby generating billions of dollars from the citizenry of CA that politicians will spend on programs supposedly connected to reducing global warming on any damnfool crap that pays them well.”

Mary Nichols, who chairs the Air Resources Board, and other advocates of cap and trade contend that in the long run, the business costs will be mitigated by savings from greater operational efficiencies, and that an entirely new green economy base will be created to the ultimate benefit of the state.

And an equally valid theory is that the state, which is already suffering from a stagnant economy and very high unemployment, will hamstring itself in the global competition for investment capital.

noooo… rly?

Nichols, et al., even have a phrase that describes the potential economic downside – “leakage.”

That means the 40% unemployment spreads from Modesto outward like a fungus.

This is Prog Social Engineering at its finest. Hilarious because they’re attempting to use a Free Market model for, well, what amounts to selling unicorn farts.

Last ghasp of sense:

[The CA Chamber of Commerce] said in a complaint filed yesterday in state court… that the California Air Resources Board lacks authority to auction carbon allowances, which it alleges is a paramount to an invalid tax or unconstitutional fee that would cost taxpayers $70 billion.

I bet they’re gonna change that Free Market model right soon…

Prices based on allowances for 2013 have tumbled more than $6 a metric ton since the beginning of August as legal threats, political opposition and rule changes plague the days leading up to the first sale of permits.

California’s budget counts on $500 million in the current fiscal year from cap-and-trade revenue.

That oughta work out just as well as Old Unkle Jerry counting on the billions and billions coming from that Facebook thing!

Spain mirrors our future as CA mirrors our nation’s future:

Morons wandering with bags on their heads to “protest” the lack of an economy.

Thaaat ought work…

    “selling unicorn farts” !!!!!!!

    Actually, it’s worse.
The gov’t is now in the business of self-bribery.
It’s selling pollution, or the rights to pollute …
    For a price, Ugarte, for a price.” (@ 2m:05s).

I think CA has seen too many movies.
    They’re now subsisting on fantasies,
and their culture has bred economic fiction.

What Doug said times a billion. Are you ready for this?

“Natural Resources Marketplace” – selling bullshit indulgences at obscene profits, taking advantage of the guilt-ridden gullible and hassle averse public. Oh, and to undermine private property ownership – there’s that as well.

You want a permit for that? You may get your permit if you let us put a conservation easement on your property. We will then sell that easement as mitigation to a developer across the world and rake in the dough. Meanwhile, you have just lost some use of your property and paid the government a permit fee to boot! Some racket, eh?

What “currencies” does the NRM use? Carbon credits are so yesterday! There are water banks, species diversity banks, and such intangibles as will make your head spin. A real auditor’s nightmare, among other things.

Well here, you read and process this.

Coming soon to a county near you! If you want to avoid this, better keep an eye on your planning departments and nip this in the bud NOW!!!

What a great concept!!! Activity X is deemed to be Harmful to the Planet, but if you give us a few million $$, we’ll let you go right ahead with Activity X.

There’s a pretty good novel, Biodiesel, about an anthropology professor who decides to start making his own diesel fuel from cooking oil. Along the way he butts up against a greedy businessman, who naturally intends to corner that market.

The writer has a website, Green Tremayne.com. This part is in the form of a blog, run by his wife, Daphne, a not-too-bright VP of Publicity.

These “markets” are already established, but we don’t have to play if we keep our local governments from participating.

I wonder if I could save my all farts in a garbage bag and when it gets full, take them in and get a rebate, or sumpin’? Of course, there would only be one way for them to check it.

Well, either that or an awful lot of canaries are going to have to die needless, agonizing deaths.

ColJ, I’ll pass on the anti-Dragon repellant (unless Pelosi is coming to my town) but after hearing clips of Commander Benghazi’s flippant presser today, I sure could use some anti-Bullshit repellant.

Carbon markets are pure, unadulterated corruption. They exist to make bureaucrats and politicians rich at the expense of everyone else.

You don’t think Al Gore, the numerous millionaire bureaucrats of the EU and the new green millionaires sucking the life out of business here (through mandates, subsidies, and setup bankruptcies) got rich by making products the public wanted, hard work, or accident, did you?

It’s not like people are attracted to power because it smells like grilled cheese sandwiches.

  14. Posted November 15, 2012 at 8:51 am |

What is the point of a market or auction of a product that has no demand, that has no useful purpose, and can be “manufactured” infinitely at zero cost to produce? Good racket indeed. The only thing missing is the law to force people to buy them.

The laws do sort of exist. You want to build, you have to buy a permit. They look at your permit application and determine that you are causing some sort of “harm” to the environment or have some other issue that requires “mitigation”. They will allow you to obtain your permit if you pay a mitigation fee and/or give them something, some aspect of your property, that they can use in their mitigation bartering. It is all unicorn farts, but they make the rules and the money.
