Oh!

shock! Surprise!! No Clue!!

After fraud-tainted parliamentary elections last December, an unprecedented wave of protest arose, with some demonstrations attracting as many as 100,000 people. Putin still won the March presidential election handily, …

…a series of measures enacted since Putin returned to the Kremlin in May for a third term show he is determined to intimidate and suppress dissidents.

One recent measure imposes a huge increase in potential fines for participants in unauthorized demonstrations. Another requires non-governmental organizations to register as foreign agents if they both receive money from abroad and engage in political activity. And another gives sweeping power to authorities to ban websites under a procedure critics denounce as opaque.

Nothing to see here… No similes… Move along.

    Simile, metaphor, analogy … nahhh.

Look, this isn’t some ideological standard or quirk, it’s the nature of power.
No matter the ideology or myth (Sorel) used to justify it, all statist political trends are towards strongmen whose goal is to maintain power. Freedom and opposition are, naturally, threats. Heck, even the claimed ideology and its true believers will become threats to the maintenance of power. Either the threats are removed and the tyranny reigns for a while, or the tyrant is removed and the associated ideology is discarded. That is not The End of History™ but a local reset of the trend.

Ergo, History™ repeats itself, because there can never be enough people with real knowledge of History™ (knowledge and experience are not inherited) and even fewer with the courage to face it; well, until a “reset” is unavoidable.

(What? Yep, that’s Doug’s First Law™: Utopias are impossible but eternal.)

Actually, this one strikes me as a good idea. Up here in Canukistan, we’ve got a pile of eco-nut lobby groups doing their best to screw up the Northern Gateway pipeline, and doing it with money provided by foreign sources (Tides Foundation, etc).

In addition to having their tax status re-adjusted, I’d love to see these asshats formally designated as hostile agents.
