The city attorney of San Bernardino is under scrutiny for telling residents to “lock their doors and load their guns” during a city council meeting.
The official explained that because the city is bankrupt and slashing public safety budgets people will need to start protecting themselves. [more]
Good advice anywhere.
Door locks won’t prevent a determined break-in, but it’ll give you some time to react,
and it’s evidence that the break-in was a hostile act and not accidental.
If you have children in the house, you still need the firearm, the skill, and the knowledge of when to use it;
but a loaded firearm should be under your personal control at all times.
That means wear it, and don’t ever let it out of your sight.
Otherwise, it needs to be inaccessible to kids, probably locked up and unloaded.
That’s often the law, too. Don’t tempt tragedy.
