I’ve suddenly found myself utterly obsessed with violin music.
What does it mean?

Probably because of all the talk in the media about gun violins.

Well, it could be that you’re channeling Nero. Goodness knows there’s plenty of reason to burn down D.C. (Yeah, yeah . . . I know — it was a lyre, but so is UghBamugh)
Or it simply could be a transition to a widened awareness. Have you had a recent epiphany involving string theory or somethin?
Frankly, I like to intersperse my Vivaldi with Charlie Daniels. Keeps me from leanin over too far in any direction. After all, if you’re gonna play in Texas, you gotta have a fiddle in the band, but you can’t do Tschaikovsky without classically trained 4-stringers.

Good.
Had some success with sex and violins, back in the day.
Pardon my ignorance, but I’ve always wondered, Is there any physical difference between a violin and a “fiddle?” Or is it just a difference in how they are played?

BTW Sondra, love the banner phrase (or whatever you may call it),
Do you have a file of these thought provoking phrases?

Jess (7): Canon in D Major? Boy you’re really taking this gun thing seriously.
sfcswanson (8): Thanks for that. I’d never heard of Kogan until now. Amazing.
MikeD (19): I saw something recently that a fiddle has wire strings, and a violin has cat gut. (Then again, maybe I’m just stringing you along.) Wikipedia doesn’t confirm this, but what do they know?
You have a whole-lotta listenin’ to do! I fall in and out of violin moods. When it hits me, I start out on Kreisler, then some Heifetz, a little Joshua Bell, some Anne-Sophie Mutter, then Kennedy playing Bach. One of the most profound statements I have ever heard was from Itzhak Perlman in an interview. He was asked if there was anything he wished he could change about himself. He said that he would like longer fingers…violin will do that to you.
MikeD (19): The way it was explained to me is that a violin sings while a fiddle dances.

Time for a little Violin Sonatas. My favorites are the Franck’s Sonata in A followed closely by the Brahms’ Sonata No. 2. Best of all, the Franck works just as well with the cello.

As my standards for female facial beauty are rooted in Southeast Asia, my fascination for Vanessa Mae could be slightly prejudiced. That she is magnificently talented, however, is inarguable. That she is prolific is uncontestable. That she is hot is beyond question. Her “Toccata and Fugue” is stirring, and exhilarating, and quite perfect.
But that doesn’t take away from other females in flowing gowns with golden locks and 4-stringers. Even little kids. I’m fascinated by a tiny 7-yr-old Korean or Chinese or Bulgarian or Jewish girl playing the Sabre Dance or Vivaldi or Paganini or damned near anything.
And a boot-scootin band with a gal in a half shirt and jeans scrapin on a fiddle is one helluva lot better’n watching Charlie Daniels, even if she’s only half as good as he is.
Several other links, including “Toccata and Fugue,” should be available in the link stack.
By the way, the basic difference between a violin and a viola is that the viola burns longer and puts out more heat when set afire.

My music comprehension started and ended with the Tonette. But, I think women prefer playing the Cello. It`s a big instrument between their legs…..

Colonel — when I was discipline officer at NavScholsCom GLakes, I had to work directly with the XO, who was a female 4-striper.
Rumor had it that she already had a big instrument between her legs ’cause she could be such a prick.
She did, however, play a great cello. Often played with the SFran city orchestra, so I hear. I saw her play once at some benefit the CO directed me to attend (he liked to play golf with me, but thought I had some rough edges that needed sanding down). She was good, and almost looked good in that black floor-length dress with a buncha shiny stuff around her neck and danglin from her ears.
Black dress, heels, diamonds, and musical talent can make just about any woman look good.
In all my years in the Crotch, including 3 years as XO, VFA-125 at NAS Lemoore, a USN Rag training sqdn for F/A-18 Hornets, I never heard of a billet called *Discipline Officer*.
I know most units did have a legal officer. Accordingly, in my imagination I would think that a *Discipline Officer* would be issued a cat of nine tails whip, one each, for the purpose of administering certain kinds of judgements rendered at Captain`s Mast……….
But, what do I know?……

The CO was getting lotsa heat from above about the ScolCom’s daily UA and overall desertion (UA 30 days or more) rates, not to mention the steadily increasing incidence of drug abuse by students and the attrition rate from the Nuclear schools programs.
He wanted an officer with prior enlisted experience, and he already knew me on a personal basis (golf). JAG had given him a young golden-haired boy straight out of Newport Indoc, but he wanted both ends of the spectrum, so he put me in the titular position of “Command Discipline Officer” responsible for maintaining records, prepping cases for NJP, conducting contraband inspections, and standardizing/coordinating efforts with all the individual school OICs.
Gave me a growly CPO as my direct assistant, an E-6 Gunner’s Mate as a sorta Claggart (a la Billy Budd) MAA, a secretary, and a clerk-typist. The JAG type was to counsel me and XO on how far we could go without running afoul of Navy Regs and/or civil authorities while formalizing Article 15, SCM, and SPCM packages.
I guess when you’re a CO and your daily UA rate averages over 240 and the deserter list is longer than the steps leading up to your office, you gotta do somethin.
My last official act in the job when I left on PCS back to sea duty was to modify and update the strawman command instruction XO and I put together my first week in the job. First in my recommendations in the forwarding letter was that no one be permitted to serve in that job for more than 12 consecutive months. Seein nothin but assholes, pussies, and deadbeats all day every day produces a sour attitude after a while.
Speaking of Navy people who are string players (bocopro, #33): Captain Jack Aubrey (“Master and Commander”, by Patrick O’Brian) played the violin, and the ship’s doctor, the cello.
One of woody Allen’s early funny lines was when he said that he played cello in a marching band.

You hate cats?
It means you need to listen to Canon in D Major.
It means happy ears
Kogan
It means you’re part gypsy and part Scots Irish.
Or maybe Venetian Italian. Vivaldi liked fiddles.
Getting a little high strung?
Worry if you also develop an obsession for saxophone music.
Obsessing about sax and violins its always a bad sign.
It means you’ve been infected by the Red Monk.
Take a Vivaldi concerto in D major and call me in about a week.
Hey, there’s only four strings.
How hard can it be?
Have you lost some low-frequency hearing lately?
It’s from fretting too much.
Or, now that I think about it, high-frequency hearing? :)
Here. Stop sniveling.
Channeling your inner Sherlock?

well considering one of the strings on a violin is called the g-string, i find it rather fitting (pun intended) ;)

It means you haven’t discovered the cello. Violins are nice, violas are better, but cellos are the best. And for the record, I played viola.
I love Vivaldi….Four Seasons
I like the warm cello sound myself, 2nd Todd in 24.
I think this is the cello, the faces of these ladies is distracting a bit:

Naw. THIS is violin music…
How soon we forget the Celtic Woman violinist Mairead Nesbitt. She not only plays she runs and jumps while doing it.
