Freedom or “Saaaafety”

or bullpuckey?

Here’s the question:

Patriot Act [now lapsed]

or

“Uniting and Strengthening America by Fulfilling Rights and Ending Eavesdropping, Dragnet-collection and Online Monitoring Act.” [USAFREEDOM Act]

or

ISIS freely running amok in our streets, apparently

[Sen. Rand Paul] “Are we going to so blithely give up our freedom? Are we going to so blindly go along and take it?” …

“I’m not going to take it anymore,” … “I don’t think the American people are going to take it anymore.”

yeah. I see all the mobs with pitchforks and torches…

…standing in line for the new iFone

Since the last time I checked, there are a coupla Starbucks within 5 miles of Mrs Grundy’s Big Ears.
…so there’s that…

Private enterprise — what a wonderful thing.

I agree with the warrant requirement for US citizens.
However, that does not preclude violations, no matter who holds the “unsearched” raw data.

    Possible means probable, even inevitable.
Since the technology exists, it will be used illegally by US gov’t, private, and foreign parties.

As with all crimes, a deterrent is required.
    Usually, that means punishment.
    You know, heads on pikes.

(What? Yeah, I worked in a simpler world where one spied the crap out of the enemy but put the fear of God into anyone who would abuse those capabilities domestically. Trouble is, politicians know that, well … knowledge is power.)

I wouldn’t be a bit surprised to learn that there was an Executive Order to covertly use domestic Comint and IRS records to fight Climate Change™.
