unsettling science

Nature doesn’t care who you are or what you think. It is what it is.
A real scientist’s job is to find out what that “is” is, not what it should be.
Nature is a real b*tch when you’re trying to uncover its secrets — the bigger the question, the more significant the details.

[T]he oceans are producing unexpectedly large quantities of isoprene … which is known to have a cooling effect on climate. Isoprene is a gas that is formed by both the vegetation and the oceans. It is very important for the climate because this gas can form particles that can become clouds and then later affect temperature and precipitation. Previously it was assumed that isoprene is primarily caused by biological processes from plankton in the sea water. The atmospheric chemists from France and Germany, however, could now show that isoprene could also be formed without biological sources in surface film of the oceans by sunlight and so explain the large discrepancy between field measurements and models.

Though the cooling effects of isoprene are well known, what is new is the discovery that the oceans are producing much more of it than has been accounted for in the alarmists’ climate models.

Climate skeptics have, of course, long argued that the models used by alarmists to predict future climate change are fatally flawed because they exaggerate the influence of man-made carbon dioxide and fail to take into account other unknown or ill-understood factors. This discovery presents further proof that the skeptics are right: the reason that all that predicted “global warming” has failed to materialize is that it has been countered by the planet’s natural cooling effects.

“Here is more evidence of what we have known for some time: that climate models simply do not mirror the reality of a chaotic system – and that they should never have been trusted in the first place,” says Dr Benny Peiser, director of the Global Warming Policy Foundation.

What this new study shows is that in the unlikely event of any agreement being reached on “climate change” by world leaders in Paris, it will do so in defiance of “the Science” and not because of it. [story]

Models are not reality.
They are tools for understanding the relationships between factors and the sensitivity of a system to changes in those factors.
If the model is incorrect or inadequate; or if the input data is not valid, the resulting answers will be wrong.
I expect more of this sort of thing as detailed knowledge grows.
Only a fool or a charlatan would believe we have the final answers already.

Buuut you’ve heard me preach this sermon before,
so we’ll skip the rest of today’s service and meet down in the fellowship hall for punch and cookies.

Oh, and remember that call to use RICO against AGW skeptics?
About that …
*heheee*

I look forward to reading bill nye, the fake science guy’s counter argument to this research. Oh, Dr. Benny Peiser must not be getting any government grants to, you know, be a member of that “settled” cabal.

OT but I had to share this interesting story!

    http://m.columbiatribune.com/news/local/college-student-would-be-sole-voter-in-cid-sales-tax/article_6702c44b-0243-51f8-861c-1df0b462cd92.html?utm_content=bufferf6fc8&utm_medium=social&utm_source=linkedin.com&utm_campaign=buffer

The power of one vote, Wonder how it will turn out. Maybe fodder for a movie?

Gee, I think I pointed that out. Over and over and over. To anybody who would listen.

    Cow stares.

Isoprene is a cooler-downer? Sounds like Nature has a real good negative feedback system.

So God’s creation is healing itself. Imagine that.

You have to be a narcissist like Obama to believe humans can impact God’s creation.

All of human creation, plus mountains and all of the atmosphere are to the Earth comprise a layer not unlike a very thin coat of lacquer on a billiard ball.

Stick: Everest at 29000 ft ~= 5.5 miles[1], earth’s radius 4000 miles …. Everest is 0.14% of the radius. Most of the Earth’s atmosphere is under 6.6 miles. The average person is 5.8 feet tall, ……….

The Sun pours more energy onto the Earth every second that all our civilizations have generated up till now. (That last calculation is off-the-cuff (or off-the-napkin), but you get the idea.)

[1] When the British guys calculated Everest’s height, some decades ago, it worked out to exactly 29000 feet. They figured nobody would believe that – or that people would doubt their accuracy – so they added 2 feet to the official report.

Since then, it’s grown to 29032 ft.

Do these “climate scientists” ever stop to wonder how the Earth managed stability before they got here?

If it’s punch and cookies, the only question is who do we punch first ….
