“I must study politics and war, that my sons may have the liberty to study mathematics and philosophy, natural history and naval architecture, in order to give their children a right to study painting, poetry, music, architecture, tapestry, and porcelain.”
    – John Adams

True stuff. All the arts, pleasant places, philosophical discussions, and mandates for peace are useless when you’re only option is to survive by killing, or die without resistance.

I wonder if John Adams understood that when a generation is fully involved in the “…study painting, poetry, music, architecture, tapestry, and porcelain.” that “politics and war” will come knocking again, uninvited.

If you want porcelain, prepare for foreign invaders.

Dunno what a “barbarian virtue” is,
but I was led to understand that civilization was instituted to overcome barbaric behavior.
(see: Conan the Barbarian’s definition of barbarian virtue)

Nooo, Teddy must’a meant something else.

I think Teddy was referring to what he considered manly virtues; protect and provide for your family, be brave and stand, even fight, for what you believe in, stay fit so you can fight if need be, become competent in the martial arts and be willing to break western on your enemies.

^ Sounds more like chivalric code than barbarian virtues.

^Well, maybe Teddy said that in the speech after he was shot and he mixed metaphors.

Put barbarian virtues (strength and savagery) and honorable, civilized behavior in a package with well-disciplined self control and you have, I think, a chivalric code.
That code included the ability to be an utter savage and let loose the dogs of war on those who deserve it, while having the strength and self-control to hold it in check until it’s the last resort, then be fully capable of doing whatever it takes to win.
A civilization must have the ability to do that, else the full time barbarians will have their way with you and your women and children and destroy your country.

A society that values metrosexual men with their ‘sensitivity’ and their foppish values, while condemning a warrior ethos whenever it appears, will sooner or later be overrun by the full time barbarians.
Homework: compare and contrast “Mohammed and Martel”, then “Mohammed, Hollande and the Paris Banlieus”

    TR on globalism:
“Some reformers may urge that in the ages distant future, patriotism, like the habit of monogamous marriage, will become a needless and obsolete virtue; but just at present the man who loves other countries as much as he does his own is quite as noxious a member of society as the man who loves other women as much as he loves his wife. Love of country is an elemental virtue, like love of home.”
    Theodore Roosevelt

^ Okay, I’ll give a guy who gets shot but finishes his speech anyway the benefit of the doubt.

It’s been said that we “civilized” types can sleep soundly in our beds because rough men stand ready to do violence on our behalf.
