and Teh Stupid
I gotta say, I am so grateful to these — The Elites, Our Superiors™ — for their most generous volunteering to take on the responsibility of deciding for me what speech is Good™ for me to hear.
It’s a helluvan undertaking, requiring many hours of study and debate, I’m sure; deciding what speech is Bad To Hear™ and then suppressing it within the institutions I pay for with my tax dollars.
I am heartily relieved that I will never be allowed to sully my ears nor thoughts with Ideas of which My Betters™ disapprove.
In other nooz, I recently had coffee with a former neighbor who moved to coastal Oregon. I learned many things from her. While she was marching on the day after the election with 30,000 of her like-minded fellows she learned there are actual NAZIs in Portland OR. Yes — Portlandia!
She has great fear for the safety of her new [guy who helps with her pets] — because it is “not safe” to be Teh Ghey. In Oregon! *whispered* “There are people with actual rebel flags on their pick-ups back in the hills”…
She reallyreallyreally misses California [it's “fillllled with white people!!!1!!!!”]; *said in a low voice with great emotional urgency* “I’m dying to see some Brown People and hear some other languages!!!!! gaaaaaaaaaah”
I’m so glad she has not turned raaaacist from her exposure to “actual NAZIs”…
On another front, I went to a lady’s lunch with a pal and among the conversations about work, family and such, I overheard from across the table — in the same low, emotion-stuffed voice — “Didja Hear??!? OMG!!!1!!! We finally got rid of Bill O’Reilly??!!!1!!!”
Here’s an exceptionally clear [for a certain value of ‘clear’] statement of the goals and ‘reasoning’ of the anti-Free Speech movement [for a certain value of ‘movement’…].
The ‘students’ at Pomona college and the Claremont Colleges object to the speaking engagement of Heather Macdonald* thusly:
Free speech, a right many freedom movements have fought for, has recently become a tool appropriated by hegemonic institutions. It has not just empowered students from marginalized backgrounds to voice their qualms and criticize aspects of the institution, but it has given those who seek to perpetuate systems of domination a platform to project their bigotry. Thus, if “our mission is founded upon the discovery of truth,” how does free speech uphold that value? The notion of discourse, when it comes to discussions about experiences and identities, deters the ‘Columbusing’ of established realities and truths (coded as ‘intellectual inquiry’) that the institution promotes. Pomona cannot have its cake and eat it, too. Either you support students of marginalized identities, particularly Black students, or leave us to protect and organize for our communities without the impositions of your patronization, without your binary respectability politics, and without your monolithic perceptions of protest and organizing. In addition, non-Black individuals do not have the right to prescribe how Black people respond to anti-Blackness.
OK… Who ordered the word salad?
ASIDE: ”hegemonic institutions”:. In Marxist philosophy, cultural hegemony is the domination of a culturally diverse society by the ruling class who manipulate the culture of that society—the beliefs, explanations, perceptions, values, and mores—so that their imposed, ruling-class worldview becomes the accepted cultural norm
Your statement contains unnuanced views surrounding the academy and a belief in searching for some venerated truth. Historically, white supremacy has venerated the idea of objectivity, and wielded a dichotomy of ‘subjectivity vs. objectivity’ as a means of silencing oppressed peoples. The idea that there is a single truth–’the Truth’–is a construct of the Euro-West that is deeply rooted in the Enlightenment, which was a movement that also described Black and Brown people as both subhuman and impervious to pain. This construction is a myth and white supremacy, imperialism, colonization, capitalism, and the United States of America are all of its progeny. The idea that the truth is an entity for which we must search, in matters that endanger our abilities to exist in open spaces, is an attempt to silence oppressed peoples.
aaaand a Word Salad with Flungpoo™ dressing and a side of badly-learned History.
