The new Triple-A threat: anti-aircraft avians

Okay, time to ease into the weekend.

Eagle on your six, Drone-2. Pull up! Pull up!
Damn! Didn’t have a chance… Mark it’s position, Drone-4, and call-in a SAR drone.
Looks like I’ll have to write that letter to its technician.

Daniel Parfitt thought he’d found the perfect drone for a two-day mapping job in a remote patch of the Australian outback. The roughly $80,000 machine had a wingspan of 7 feet and resembled a stealth bomber. There was just one problem. His machine raised the hackles of one prominent local resident: a wedge-tailed eagle.

Swooping down from above, the eagle used its talons to punch a hole in the carbon fiber and Kevlar fuselage of [the] drone, which lost control and plummeted to the ground. “[O]ne of these wedge-tailed eagles just dive-bombed the drone and punched it out of the sky,” …. “It ended up being a pile of splinters.” [story]

Nature, red [kevlar-fibered] in tooth and claw [talon].

Can’t we all just get along?
You know, share the skies, an’ all that?

I predict a significant uptick in community-college falconry courses.

What if he has a rake?

(What? Dunno, revenge for birds sucked into jet engines, smashed by wind generators, and fried by solar arrays?)
(What? Strap frikkin’ laser beams on their heads?)

I dunno what this guy is complaining about. I mean, that eagle could have been armed with something dangerous.

    Well done

And to think, I was going to use a 12 gauge for drones.

(BTW, Doug, if by cultural ref you are referring to the “what if he has a rake” link, that video isn’t available here in Canuckia so I couldn’t see it. Guess ABC figures we’re not worthy of them …)

Well, all I have is my daddy’s old 1929 Winchester Model 12 in 16X2 3/4.

Laughed my ass off at the rake! Brought down that drone quick. Nets are entanglement devices and not allowed. Thats a thin line to push as the tines did the same thing as the net. Just saying…

^ “Pining” sounds like a good word for this new phenomenon.
