  1. There’s a graphic over at curmudgeonly-skeptical that expresses my sentiment on the subject:

  2. Well ranted, m’dear.
[motions for cup-bearer to re-fill Claire's wassailing bowl]

Yeah, I’ve occasionally tried to formulate a simple statement that describes this kind of Bambiism™. Clearly, its moral structure appears highly convoluted and self-contradictory within every-day contexts; but it can be somewhat simplified, if you identify its hidden assumptions.
For instance, I think one of the main assumptions, here, is that plants don’t feel pain.
Without that, Bambiism™ (or an associated cult like veganism) loses all morality.

Once you recognize that Nature is trying to kill you 24/7 and that you don’t want to be on the digested side of the whole, you know, predation thing, you’ll soon learn how to “sharpen a stick.”

Don’t know the answer to your question, though, Claire.
It’s kind of a cop-out to play the Darwin, Eloi, or post-apocalyptic-movie cards.

Mebbe a prepper can answer your question better.
    Or a psychiatrist.

    (What? God complex?)

  3. Forget it, Claire. It’s Vox.

  4. ^ Ooooh, good Polanski ref.

    Also,
“All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.” — Orwell’s Animal Farm

    Hey, wait…
Wild animals endure illness, injury, and starvation. We should help.”
Isn’t that like, you know, domesticating farm animals?

  5. Exactly, Fawkes.
There are certain sites to which I won’t give the click traffic, vox is one of many such compilations of extreme idiocracy.

Not only that, but I merely have to hang out with the in-laws or visit Bloomington, IN to get more than my fill.

  6. Thanx, DM! *drinks deep* {*but ladylike*}

Yeah, I know — Vox. But it’s Out There — and runs deeper than most sensible people imagine. And therefore, must be dealt with.

  9. It reminds me a bot of the lady who called in to a talk show during the Viet Nam war and wanted us to feel bad for the horses that were being hurt there.

The Vox writer is probably unfamiliar with the concept of “food chain” that rules that animal world. Bigger ones eat littler ones (mostly), on land, sea, and air. The animals that are in the best circumstances are the ones in our care (mostly)..

Maybe she’d like to adopt a few honey badgers, or a few anacondas.

About this nature thing – it’s been said – more than once – that Nature is trying to kill us, day in and day out. And like some human groups, there is no negotiation. We adapt and defend, or drown – or freeze – or get squished under a pile of boulders – &c.

  11. Saw an obit for David Brower a while back. He founded several envirnmental orgs during his life and was the Sierra Clubs first Exec Officer, probably back when it was less political. Was able to find this quote again from the obit:

“As a young man, Brower developed a keen interest in butterflies and became an expert lepidopterist. It was while watching butterflies emerge from their chrysalises that he learned an abiding lesson about wild nature: Don’t interfere.

Noticing the butterflies’ struggle to emerge, Brower “lent a helping hand” by widening the split in the chrysalis to facilitate their emergence. That well-intentioned interference prevented the flow of fluid from abdomen to wings, which “stayed shriveled, and the poor things began running around helplessly until they died,” Brower wrote in his autobiography. “Freeing them, I had denied them their freedom.”"

  12. In the end, she will advocate taking care of them in the
same manner that PETA does. This is not about imposing
touchy-feely liberalism or helping the animals or the
environment. These people could not give a rodents
rectum about the animals, to them it is all about advancing
a brutal form of Stalinist totalitarian communism.

The moment the left no longer had the Vietnam War as a
“Focusing agent,” they began drifting towards softer issues
like animal rights, the environment, gay marriage, etc.
It is still the people like Bill Ayers (Who advocated the
elimination of 25,000,000 American’s who could not
be reeducated,) who will still be at the top of their
    revolutionary communist movement.

This is the same movement that pResident Obonzo has
been indoctrinated in since his Red Diaper Baby Baby
mother shit him out of her womb. This is not (And never
has been) about the environment or the animals. It is
a means to an end. While there are people so monument-
ally stupid that they fall into the category of Ellie Mae
Clampett, thankfully Darwin takes care of them just
like that moron who took his new bride to Alaska to
commune with Grizzly Bears. Bear crap is such an
    ignominious end!

Hey, Jacy – What’s this “we” shit Kemo Sabe? See that pack of hyenas over there? You go talk to them and tell them to quit shredding that impala.
Later, we can talk about helping grizzly bears, if you’re up to it.

    Dangerous thought, there…

ZZMike @9 — yeah, the idea “Don’t die a caveman death” [ie starving, freezing, eaten by bears] has been replaced by “Don’t die a clown death” [fireworks, lightsaber riot, segway, hover-board]…
